East Brunswick Wrestler Achieves 100th WIN!

Mark Schleiffer of East Brunswick (Princeton Commit) texted me yesterday after getting his 100th win!

Mark has been an all state wrestler throughout high school and has committed to wrestle at Princeton with his brother, Jon who was a 4 x All State Wrestler and a state champion his Senior Year.

I always tell parents and athletes, SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES.

What can we learn from Mark?

Here’s a List of common practices and traits I picked up on as soon as he sent me a text message.

– Mark trains year round with us. He never pulls the “I’m too busy” line during the in season.

– His grades are EXCELLENT. He has been accepted to Princeton University. He achieves Excellence in ALL areas of his life, NOT just wrestling.

– Mark does NOT live close to any of our locations and he STILL trains with us 2 x week In Season! I know kids who live IN town who don’t show up in season. Mark drives 45-60 minutes each way to train.

– Mark improves his skill training year round by training at CJA Wrestling Club w/ Gene Lezark. He has been going to CJA for MANY years, since middle school. He doesn’t bounce around to 5 different coaches. There is MUCH to be said about sticking to 1 system and LOYALTY.

– Mark is TOUGH. He is Disciplined. I never feel that the Coaches are more motivated than Mark is. This is MORE than motivation. This is called DISCIPLINE. Motivation fades, Discipline is the Strength to do what you must do, not just what you feel like doing.

East Brunswick Athlete Gains 30 + Lbs & Confidence BIG TIME

Check out this AWESOME SUCCESS STORY of Mihir Pillai of east Brunswick.

Mihir began training with us in late 5th grade while his older brother trained here.

At first, Mihir just did the warm up with us plus 1 or 2 sets of sleds and Kettlebell Carries.

Slowly, we added a little bit here and there and now we see this amazing young man transformed BEYOND the Physical.

His confidence has changed tremendously and he has gained OVER 30 lbs!

Listen to how he plays Soccer, Wrestles, trains with us AND does work on his OWN.

He has FUN.

TRUE “Strength” transcends the weight room and THAT is what we’re all about at The Underground Strength Gym.

Brett Donner Awarded with Wrestler of The Year

BIG congrats to Brett Donner from Wall township who has been awarded with The Star Ledger Wrestler of the Year Award.

Brett trains at The Manasquan Underground Strength Gym and as I’ve mentioned before, he is often the first one at the gym and 99% of the time is the LAST one to leave, always staying after to do extra work on his own, without anyone telling him to do so.

I’ve seen Brett ride his bike to the gym. Actually, it’s not even his bike, it’s a pink beach bike but he didn’t use this or anything else as an excuse. He shows up and attacks his training like a champion.

Brett placed 3rd in the state this season, beating Edison Undergrounder, Jordan Pagano for the Bronze. The state champion was from Edison Underground Strength Gym, Jon Shleiffer, who wrestles at East Brunswick and will now move on to Princeton to wrestle.

Underground Strength Wrestlers Prove STRONG at GMC Wrestling Tournament

The Underground Strength Gym of Edison

had 7 wrestlers in the Finals of The GMC Wrestling Tournament

This was amazing to see.

To see this many wrestlers from a tiny gym make such an impact at this tough tourney.

Our small gym has become world renown and from day 1 I’ve always said the kids are # 1.

It feels good to see that our coaches and The Underground has played a role in the success of these kids.

In addition, these wrestlers have supportive parents which is the KEY to all of this success.

They also have great club and HS Coaches and the critical aspect is having work ethic and the guts to do the work week after week, month after month, year after year.

3 of these wrestlers took Gold and Jon Shleyfer of East Brunswick was awarded The OW (Outstanding Wrestler).

3 wrestlers in consolations and all 3 wrestlers placed 4th in some hard fought battles

It’s NOT so much the places or the medals these wrestlers won but the obstacles they have ALL had to overcome to get that far in such a tough tournament.

Some of these are personal obstacles and I will not share them, but I know that these were stressful events to say the least and ALL these boys chose to rise above and become men amongst boys.

It’s easy to let life and stress get the best of you. I am always impressed and proud when I see our athletes face obstacles and defeat them rather than letting the obstacles hold them down and defeat them.

Taking Gold at The GMC Wrestling Tournament were:

Kyle Brown of Old Bridge

Ray Jaz of South Plainfield

Jon Shleiffer of East Brunswick and OW

Jon won his 4th consecutive county title and pinned in the finals!

I am sure he has broken even more school records and if I haven’t announced yet, he is going to Princeton and holds a 4.2 GPA

Princeton as we all know has a GREAT track record in education but their wrestling program is on the rise and the entire staff of Coaches on the Wrestling Team AND the Strength & Conditioning Staff are World Class!

Jeff Plungis of South Plainfield. Last year Jeff was barely 100 lbs and on the JV team. This is a HUGE success for Jeff.

Eric Thomas On Being Successful In Sports AND Life

Let me preface today’s newsletter with an awesome accomplishment of  our homeboy, Jonathan Shleyfer.

Jonathan trains with us 2 x week and has been doing so for 2 years.

Last year he took 2nd place in the state and 3rd place at The Super 32.

He is in advanced classes and  wrestles on average 4 – 5 x week.

And…..

He just committed to Princeton University.

Just like everyone else, he has the same 24 hrs every day.

He lives 15-20 minutes away and can easily go to a Coach closer to home.

He didn’t wait for tomorrow, next week or after the season, or after the new year or when he got his license, etc to train at The Underground.

He found out about us and got after it.

So, when you say that you have too much school work, no time, you’re too busy, too tired, etc.

You’re just making excuses.

The famous saying I love:

“If it’s important you will find a way.

If not, you will find an excuse.”

It’s the truth.

*** Time is the ONLY thing you can NEVER get back. ***

Don’t look back wishing you took action in life.

I’ve never met a person who said they did NOT want to succeed.

NEVER.

But, action is what tells the truth and separates you from the guys sitting the bench.

100% of the people I meet SAY they want to WIN.

I’d say somewhere around 5% actually step UP and DO what it takes to WIN.

Then the top 1% do EVERYTHING to WIN.

Because I KNOW that what you learn at The Underground is what will teach you to be a  BIG success in life, NOT just sports!

Jon Shleyfer Breaks East Brunswick School Record For MOST Wins

Jon Shleyfer is only a junior and with 3 weeks left this season he will be racking up MORE wins.

His success is NO surprise as he trains year round in both wrestling and at The Underground.

His motivation is extremely high and he wants to WIN.

Watchung Hills Wrestler Wins Somerset County Wrestling Tournament

Matt Coppola started training with us before his sophomore wrestling season.

That year he took 4th in the county and qualified for the states.

Some thing happened junior year – 4th in the county and state qualifier.

This year Matty was determined to GO for Gold.

The night Matty won the Somerset County Wrestling Tournament his Dad sent me a text message that Matt took the Gold! I was bed ridden and stuck in bed with the flu and I gotta admit, it was that text message that settled my mind and helped me fall asleep.

Check out what Matty said about why he was able to go from three 4th place finishes to a Gold Medal.

HUGE Congrats to Matty Coppola. This kid is an extremely hard worker and BIG time dedicated.

He shows up and does the work that other wrestlers don’t do. THAT is how champions are made!

NJ Athlete Training: Football, Baseball & Wrestling Workouts

We’ve got Baseball, Football & Wrestling athletes training together.

How is that possible?

Simple, NOT easy 🙂

The fallacies of sports specific training and other gimmicks are confusing many athletes, parents and sport coaches.

Because we train for all around athleticism, our workouts build up the athlete’s strengths, attack their weak areas and make you better every workout.

The “sports specific” training is the sport itself. The training athletes need builds strength, flexibility, mobility, speed, power and confidence.

The mistake is to think each athlete can or can’t do all exercises.

During the In season is when the sport gets the changes to avoid overuse injuries but during the off season, we attack your weak areas and build you UP.

The Russian Kettlebells develop speed, athleticism, coordination, overall strength and mental toughness.

The Kettlebells are just 1 tool we use in a tool box.

These athletes are at the top of their game by training to become better.

The training they’re experiencing at The Underground Strength Gym compared to what their friends are following: laying on benches, machines, half reps, poor technique, etc leads to injury and NO results.

Ya gotta want it – once you want it and get committed, GREAT things happen!

Dedicated NJ Athletes

Above, The New Year’s Eve Wrecking Crew! Where Were YOU!!??

Monday morning, 9 am, 10 athletes showed up ready to kick ass and take names.

Others were in wrestling, basketball or track and field practice.

Then there were others…..

You KNOW who you are.

9 am was “too early” for you….

you were “too tired”….

Shame on YOU. I get disappointed in the slackers because I KNOW you can do better, you just don’t WANT to do better.

The Champions out there, your competition….. They LOVE people like you. The excuse makers and slackers make it easy for others to win. It makes it easier for the Champions to climb to the top.

If you are too tired and too lazy to get your ass out of bed for a 9 AM workout, the TRUTH is this:

– YOU Will NOT Achieve Above Average Success

– That’s the TRUTH that your Coaches can’t say to you with fear of losing their job and that’s the TRUTH your parents don’t tell you because they hope you will be above average.

– Hoping does NOTHING. Start doing the WORK.

– YOU have the potential to become GREAT, but potential only comes to life when you rise above and do the work that others fear.
