How bad do you want to be successful as an athlete?
Parents, do you REALLY want your child to be successful?
Watch this video and don’t look back regretting what you coulda / shoulda done!
The Champion NEVER Accepts These 2 Excuses…..
On the same token, the Supportive Parents NEVER make these 2 excuses for their child, either:
1) I’m too busy
2) It’s too hard
Summer time comes around and everyone is too busy.
A time where you are no longer in school and sports camps are in full swing.
For an athlete, there is No such thing as “too busy” when you want to become a champion. You find the time for things that are important, if they are not important, you find a excuse.
For the parent, you decide if your child deserves expert coaching or you’re accepting of “normal” coaching in the weight room.
Normal actions = Normal results.
Normal is the same as average.
I KNOW that Champions NEVER wake up in the morning and pump their first in the air and shout, “YES! TODAY I’M GONNA BE AVERAGE!!!”
You’re either IN, or you’re in the way.
Choose your path carefully.

The Underground Strength Gym of Edison
had 7 wrestlers in the Finals of The GMC Wrestling Tournament
This was amazing to see.
To see this many wrestlers from a tiny gym make such an impact at this tough tourney.
Our small gym has become world renown and from day 1 I’ve always said the kids are # 1.
It feels good to see that our coaches and The Underground has played a role in the success of these kids.
In addition, these wrestlers have supportive parents which is the KEY to all of this success.
They also have great club and HS Coaches and the critical aspect is having work ethic and the guts to do the work week after week, month after month, year after year.
3 of these wrestlers took Gold and Jon Shleyfer of East Brunswick was awarded The OW (Outstanding Wrestler).
3 wrestlers in consolations and all 3 wrestlers placed 4th in some hard fought battles
It’s NOT so much the places or the medals these wrestlers won but the obstacles they have ALL had to overcome to get that far in such a tough tournament.
Some of these are personal obstacles and I will not share them, but I know that these were stressful events to say the least and ALL these boys chose to rise above and become men amongst boys.
It’s easy to let life and stress get the best of you. I am always impressed and proud when I see our athletes face obstacles and defeat them rather than letting the obstacles hold them down and defeat them.
Taking Gold at The GMC Wrestling Tournament were:
Kyle Brown of Old Bridge
Ray Jaz of South Plainfield
Jon Shleiffer of East Brunswick and OW
Jon won his 4th consecutive county title and pinned in the finals!
I am sure he has broken even more school records and if I haven’t announced yet, he is going to Princeton and holds a 4.2 GPA
Princeton as we all know has a GREAT track record in education but their wrestling program is on the rise and the entire staff of Coaches on the Wrestling Team AND the Strength & Conditioning Staff are World Class!
Jeff Plungis of South Plainfield. Last year Jeff was barely 100 lbs and on the JV team. This is a HUGE success for Jeff.
Ryan Fahy of Spotswood
Dan Hedden of South Plainfield
Max Pavlis of Spotswood
Mark Shleyfer of East Brunswick
Mike Klimkiewicz of South Brunswick
John Sheedy of Bishop Ahr
After seeing the success of our wrestlers and all the other athletes who train here, we are proving that we are the best at what we do for athletes. Period.

3 Mistakes Parents of Athletes Must Avoid
In the world of fitness, strength & conditioning, etc there are fads and gimmicks that often times trick people into thinking they are doing the right things, but ultimately wasting time and money.
For an athletes life, time is of the essence. Time can never be won back. Take these 3 tips and avoid them like the plague.
Mistake # 1) Sending weak kids to speed training classes.
If you’re weak then no matter how much you run, how many ladders drills you use, how perfect your arm swings are…. These cool looking activities do not make your child faster. Kids still need to get stronger.
Getting stronger does not mean lifting weights. New athletes at The Underground Strength Gym begin with bodyweight and all introductory training methods. As they develop strength in body AND mind they soon become ready for the next level in performance training.
Mistake # 2) Cutting weight does not make your child stronger than everyone else.
It eats away your child’s heard earned muscle and makes him weaker… and miserable (I know, newsflash, right!!??).
I’ve seen this in Wrestling and in Pop Warner Football. Heck, we have a wrestler who weighs 84 lbs and is talking about cutting weight and going 80 lbs. Really? At 84 lbs we are cutting weight. If a Coach OR parent allows this they need a wake up call.
When you put on muscle you can actually eat more food and lose weight because your metabolism will be revving so fast.
Mistake # 3) Stopping your in season strength training doesn’t allow you to keep the gains you worked for in the off season. Use it or lose it.
Training is year round. At The Underground Strength Gym we look at what each athlete needs as an individual. Some need more power and speed work, others need more strength, others need their injuries to be addressed, others need more mental toughness and confidence…..
But, no one can reach their potential and maximize their success by stopping their in season performance training.
Smarter is always better.
Parents – Help your child achieve more success by avoiding these 3 mistakes above.

Mistake # 2
Is your child being pigeon holed into following a cookie cutter program?
Is the program being individualized for your child?
Does the program continuously assess your child’s needs, looking at weak points, strong points and also the mental aspect your child needs?
Athletes are ALL different.
They require different coaching styles.
They require different levels of intensity.
They require different exercises to address muscular imbalances and weak areas.
Their training program must constantly evolve to be most effective.
A Coach with experience understands that all athletes are different and all athletes require different training programs.
For ANY of this training to work, the parents AND the athletes need to be humble, open minded and willing to work HARD on a consistent basis.
Some parents are too proud to admit that their child needs an expert to help them.
Instead, Dad buys a cookie cutter program from the book store or on the internet and decides to coach his son / daughter on his own.
There is a safety issue here and without a doubt, copying a program from a book and thinking that is what will take your child to the top is a big mistake.
Some kids are too arrogant to work with a Coach or worst, they might not want to do the work necessary to get to the top. Being successful and becoming a champion requires hard work.
Watch this video where we explain key traits athletes need to succeed not just in sports, but in life as well.

The Path To Success Starts Now
The proof is in the pudding
I’m sure you’ve heard that saying before. It’s true. Results are the TRUTH and results are where we excel.
Personally, I hate building web sites and trying to hold referral contests and all the other behind the scenes stuff that goes into a business.
I am a COACH. I train athletes and my goal is to change their lives. I fall asleep thinking about how we can help athletes on an even greater level and wake up thinking about our Underground Strength Gym athletes.
With my web sites comes everyone and their Mom copying our web sites, stealing our logo and pretending to be great at what they do.
There are pretenders and there is the REAL Deal.
If you want the REAL deal then you train with us. Period. End of story.
If we weren’t so busy kicking ass and taking names, helping athletes get powerful results, we’d have more photos for you. Truth be told we’re too busy LIVING the code, in the gym, doing WORK.

The 3rd annual LIFT STRONG fundraiser was held at The Underground Strength Gym in Edison, NJ on June 18th.
Total funds raised between competitors and visitors showing their support: $ 1,220
Our first year we raised slightly more than $ 1,220 and our 2nd year we raised near $ 2,000. I will be doubling the biggest donation which was $ 250 and donating $ 500.
A Few “First Time” things happened this year:
1) We had less competitors from The Underground than ever before – NOT good.
2) Our BIGGEST donations came from NON members and visitors. I would have assumed our very own members would see the importance behind this and try to go above and beyond but I guess not. Our best donation in house was $ 60.
Our BIGGEST donations actually came from NON – members, with donations in the range of $ 100 – $ 250. Our HIGHEST donation came from Larry Wasserman of Breathe Fitness Studio.
This has always been an “in house” competition but this time around we allowed some outsiders to enter.
DeFranco’s Gym had 7 competitors and we had one competitor, Patrick Moore, drive down and compete all the way from Poughkeepsie, NY!
This was, unfortunately, our WORST showing ever. Our participation was DOWN BIG time as our 2nd year had 26 competitors, ALL in house. This time around we only had TWO college competitors, Curls and Chow.
To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. I am finding there to be TOO many excuses and TOO many stories with regards to why today’s generation of athlete’s can’t do this or that. I won’t enable it. Not in my gym.
Changes to Come….
LIFT STRONG will be a MUCH bigger event next year as I will be inviting competitors in from around the world and I will NOT ask athletes of The Underground TWICE to compete.
The minimum donation will no longer be $ 40. I guess this means some high school athletes need to find a job, which seems to be a strange phenomena these days. Work? get a Job? What!!??
It’s time to pay attention, get your act together or get OUT. Period!
Below is some of the action with part II and the final results coming shortly….
I want to thank the friends and family who showed up not just from inside the Underground but from those who follow me at my personal blog.
Stay tuned for Part II and the final results of LIFT STRONG 2010.
